The Tamil Nadu government will provide scholarships for postgraduate and doctoral studies at foreign universities to students from the Adi Dravidar and Tribal communities. The scheme aims to enhance educational opportunities and improve representation in higher education globally.
A total of ₹36 crore has been allocated for the initiative, expected to benefit approximately 200 students annually. Eligible students can pursue courses in a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, science, arts, and social sciences.
The scholarship will cover tuition fees up to ₹20 lakh per year, along with allowances for accommodation, food, travel, and other living expenses. A one-time allowance of ₹2 lakh will be provided for visa and related charges. Students studying in institutions ranked within the top 500 globally by QS or NIRF rankings are eligible.
The scheme prioritizes first-generation learners and women students. Preference will be given to those pursuing studies in fields relevant to Tamil Nadu’s development needs. Students must have secured admission to a foreign university and will be selected based on academic merit, family income, and a personal interview.
The government has partnered with the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department to implement the scheme. Applications will be submitted online through a dedicated portal. A committee comprising experts from various fields will oversee the selection process.
The initiative is a continuation of previous efforts to promote education among marginalized communities in the state. The government believes this scholarship will empower students from these communities to gain global exposure and contribute to the state’s progress upon their return. The scheme is expected to launch in the academic year 2024-25. Details regarding the application process and eligibility criteria will be available on the department’s website soon.
