Aroor-Thuravur elevated highway likely to be commissioned by August

The Aroor-Thuravur elevated highway project in Kerala is anticipated to be commissioned by August, potentially easing traffic congestion along the busy National Highway 66 stretch. The 12.3 km elevated highway, constructed at a cost of approximately ₹1,956 crore, is part of the larger Cherthala-Kayamkulam stretch of NH 66 widening project.

Currently, 98% of the construction work is complete. Remaining tasks include final layer of asphalting, installation of streetlights, and safety barriers. The project faced delays due to land acquisition issues and pandemic-related disruptions, but is now nearing completion.

The elevated highway features 12 bridges and a 1.2 km long viaduct. It aims to bypass key urban areas like Aroor and Thuravur, reducing travel time and congestion. The project is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, particularly during peak hours and monsoon seasons when the existing road frequently experiences flooding.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is conducting final inspections and safety checks. Once commissioned, the highway will have four lanes, facilitating smoother movement of vehicles.

Local residents and businesses have expressed optimism about the project’s positive impact on the region’s economy and connectivity. The completion of the elevated highway is a crucial step in upgrading the infrastructure along the NH 66 corridor in Kerala, a vital transportation artery for the state. The project also includes service roads constructed alongside the elevated highway to cater to local traffic needs. NHAI officials are confident that the highway will be open to the public before the onset of the monsoon season.
