Should Congress stand with ‘those rejected by people’, asks MP Manickam Tagore

Manickam Tagore, a Congress MP, has publicly questioned the party’s strategy of aligning with parties rejected by the electorate in Tamil Nadu. He specifically refers to the DMK-led alliance’s performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections where they suffered significant losses despite winning a majority of seats.

Tagore argues that Congress’s consistent alliance with the DMK, despite the latter’s perceived anti-Hindu stance and corruption allegations, has damaged the Congress party’s image and electoral prospects in Tamil Nadu. He points to the decline in Congress’s vote share over successive elections when allied with the DMK.

He suggests the party needs to reassess its approach and consider building its own strength independently or forging alliances with parties that have a broader appeal and aren’t burdened by negative public perception. Tagore believes the current strategy confines Congress to a limited number of seats and prevents it from expanding its influence.

The MP criticizes the DMK for not accommodating Congress adequately in seat-sharing arrangements and accuses them of using Congress primarily to secure the minority vote bank. He contends that Congress has been consistently sacrificing its own interests for the sake of the alliance.

Tagore’s statements are seen as a challenge to the current leadership’s decision-making regarding alliances in Tamil Nadu. He advocates for a more pragmatic approach focused on strengthening the Congress party at the grassroots level and identifying alliances that align with its core values and long-term goals. He emphasizes the need to attract voters beyond the traditional Congress base and address concerns regarding the DMK’s image.

He further questions whether continually supporting parties rejected by the people is a viable path to electoral success for Congress in Tamil Nadu, urging a serious internal discussion on the matter. He believes a shift in strategy is crucial for the party’s revival in the state.
