The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed West Bengal’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to immediately arrest individuals involved in post-poll violence following the Lok Sabha elections. This order stems from reports of widespread clashes, arson, and damage to property across multiple districts.
Specific incidents highlighted include violence in Cooch Behar, where BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya alleged attacks on party workers and damage to homes. Similar reports emerged from other districts like North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and East Burdwan. The ECI has received complaints detailing assaults, intimidation, and threats against political opponents.
The Commission has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the initial response to the violence and has demanded a comprehensive report detailing the arrests made and the measures taken to restore law and order. It has also sought details on preventive measures implemented to prevent further escalation.
The ECI has instructed officials to register FIRs against perpetrators based on complaints received and evidence gathered. It emphasized the need for strict action against those found responsible, irrespective of their political affiliation.
Furthermore, the Commission has directed the state government to ensure the safety and security of all political functionaries and voters. It has also called for the immediate removal of officers who have failed to maintain law and order in their respective jurisdictions.
The ECI’s actions follow a meeting with the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and other senior officials to review the post-poll situation. The Commission has warned that any laxity in maintaining law and order will be viewed seriously. The state government has been asked to submit action-taken reports regularly. The focus is on restoring confidence in the electoral process and ensuring a peaceful environment.
