Bengaluru city police recover 692 lost, stolen mobile phones worth ₹1.75 crore

Bengaluru City Police have recovered 692 lost or stolen mobile phones valued at ₹17.5 crore. The recovery is a result of ‘Operation Milana’, initiated on January 1st, 2024.

The recovered phones include high-end models from Apple, Samsung, and other brands. Police tracked and apprehended individuals involved in the theft and resale of these devices. A significant number of phones were recovered from individuals purchasing stolen property, highlighting a demand for cheaper mobile phones.

The operation involved analyzing IMEI numbers of reported lost or stolen phones and tracing them through various channels. Police collaborated with mobile phone retailers and service centers to identify and recover the devices.

Of the recovered phones, 432 have been returned to their owners. The remaining 260 are in the process of being returned after verification of ownership. Citizens can claim their phones by visiting the Cyber Crime Economic Offences Wing (CCEOW) office with proof of ownership, including the original bill, IMEI number, and a police complaint copy if filed.

Police Commissioner B Dayananda stated that Operation Milana will continue to address mobile phone theft and ensure the return of stolen devices to their rightful owners. He emphasized the importance of registering IMEI numbers and filing complaints immediately upon losing a phone.

The police also warned against purchasing mobile phones from unverified sources, as this encourages theft. They are working to dismantle networks involved in mobile phone theft and illegal resale. The recovered phones were displayed at the City Police Commissioner’s office. The operation demonstrates a focused effort to combat mobile phone crime in Bengaluru.
