The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) will undertake a district-level analysis of its performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, aiming to understand the reasons for the defeat and formulate strategies for future polls. This decision was made during an extended session of the APCC, attended by party MLAs, defeated candidates, and key functionaries.
The analysis will focus on identifying shortcomings in candidate selection, campaign strategies, and voter outreach programs. Specific attention will be given to understanding why the party failed to secure votes from communities traditionally supportive of the Congress. The party acknowledges a significant decline in its vote share across several constituencies.
Key discussion points included the impact of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the party’s stance on the issue. There’s internal debate on whether a more nuanced approach to the CAA could have yielded better results, particularly in Upper Assam.
The APCC also plans to assess the effectiveness of its alliance with other opposition parties, including the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The performance of the alliance as a whole will be reviewed, and the contributions of each partner evaluated.
The party intends to revitalize its organizational structure at the grassroots level. This includes strengthening booth-level committees and increasing engagement with local communities. A key focus will be on attracting younger voters and addressing their concerns.
The APCC has formed several committees to conduct the analysis and submit reports within a specified timeframe. These reports will then be discussed at a state-level meeting to finalize a comprehensive action plan. The Congress aims to rebuild its support base and prepare for the upcoming local body elections and the next Assembly elections. The party leadership emphasized the need for collective responsibility and a unified approach to overcome the current challenges.
