USA’s National Reconnaissance Office awards contract to Bengaluru space startup Pixxel to provide hyperspectral imagery

Pixxel, a Bengaluru-based space startup, has been awarded a contract by the United States National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) to provide hyperspectral imagery. This marks the first time a commercial hyperspectral imagery provider has been directly contracted by the NRO.

The contract falls under the NRO’s Commercial Space Data Program (CSDP), designed to evaluate the potential of commercially available space-based imagery for national security applications. Pixxel will provide high-resolution hyperspectral data captured by its six satellites launched in November 2023.

Hyperspectral imagery captures a wider spectrum of light than traditional satellite imagery, revealing detailed information about the chemical composition of objects and surfaces. This capability has applications in areas like mineral identification, agricultural monitoring, environmental assessment, and defense.

Pixxel’s technology aims to offer near-daily global coverage with its constellation. The imagery will be delivered through Pixxel’s platform, allowing the NRO to analyze and utilize the data for various purposes.

Awais Ahmed, CEO of Pixxel, stated the contract validates the company’s technology and its potential to address critical national security needs. He emphasized the importance of hyperspectral imagery in gaining deeper insights into the Earth’s environment.

The NRO’s decision to partner with Pixxel signifies a growing trend of collaboration between government agencies and commercial space companies. This allows the NRO to access innovative technologies and capabilities more quickly and efficiently than developing them in-house.

Pixxel has raised over $35 million in funding and plans to launch a larger constellation of satellites in the future to further enhance its data collection capabilities. The company’s focus is on building a hyperspectral data-as-a-service platform for various industries. This contract with the NRO is a significant milestone for Pixxel and the Indian space industry, demonstrating the country’s growing capabilities in space technology.
