State grants approval to procure six MRI machines for district hospitals

The Karnataka government has approved the procurement of six Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines for district hospitals across the state. This decision aims to improve diagnostic capabilities and reduce the burden on tertiary care centers in Bengaluru.

The approved hospitals to receive the MRI machines are: District Hospital, Chikkamagaluru; District Hospital, Davanagere; District Hospital, Hassan; District Hospital, Shivamogga; District Hospital, Kalaburagi; and District Hospital, Ballari.

The total cost of the procurement is approximately ₹80 crore, with each MRI machine and associated infrastructure estimated to cost around ₹13.33 crore. The funds will be sourced from the State Infrastructure Pool Fund (SIPF).

This initiative addresses a significant gap in healthcare infrastructure in many districts, where access to MRI scans is limited, forcing patients to travel to Bengaluru for these crucial diagnostic tests. The government anticipates this will alleviate the strain on major hospitals in the capital and provide timely diagnoses for patients in their respective districts.

The order specifies that the machines should be of 1.5 Tesla capacity and include all necessary accessories, installation, and commissioning costs. A three-year maintenance contract is also part of the procurement process.

The Department of Health and Family Welfare will oversee the procurement process, ensuring adherence to quality standards and timely implementation. The move is part of a broader effort to strengthen healthcare infrastructure at the district level and improve access to advanced medical services for the population. The government hopes this will lead to better patient outcomes and reduce healthcare disparities across the state.
