## Summary of The Hindu Article: Shivamogga Institute of Medical Sciences Seeks Intake Increase
Shivamogga Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) has requested an increase in student intake for both postgraduate (PG) and undergraduate (UG) medical courses. Currently, SIMS has 150 UG seats and 76 PG seats across various specialties.
The request to the National Medical Commission (NMC) proposes raising the UG intake to 250 seats and the PG intake to 108 seats. This increase is justified by the institute’s expanded infrastructure, including additional classrooms, laboratories, and clinical facilities. Specifically, SIMS has added 100-bedded capacity to its existing hospital, bringing the total to 650 beds.
The expansion also includes upgraded departments like the Microbiology, Pathology, and Biochemistry labs, alongside new lecture halls and skill labs. The hospital now boasts improved intensive care units and diagnostic services.
SIMS authorities state the increased intake is necessary to address the shortage of doctors in the region and to meet the growing demand for medical education. They highlight the institute’s consistent good academic performance and its role in providing healthcare services to a large population in Shivamogga and surrounding districts.
The NMC conducted an inspection of SIMS in December 2023 to assess its readiness for the proposed increase. The institute is optimistic about a positive response from the NMC, anticipating approval before the start of the next academic year.
Approval of the request would significantly boost SIMS’s capacity to train more medical professionals and contribute to improved healthcare access in the region. The institute believes the enhanced infrastructure and facilities meet NMC standards for increased student intake. The increased PG seats are particularly important for addressing the specialist doctor shortage.
