Palliative care unit opens at KC General Hospital in Bengaluru; State plans wider expansion

A new 20-bed palliative care unit has opened at KC General Hospital in Bengaluru, Karnataka, marking a significant step towards improved end-of-life care in the state. The unit, inaugurated by Health Minister Ramdurga Prasad, aims to provide comprehensive pain and symptom management, psychological and spiritual support to patients with serious illnesses and their families.

The initiative addresses a critical gap in healthcare access, as palliative care services have historically been limited, particularly in public hospitals. Currently, only a few medical college hospitals in Karnataka offer dedicated palliative care units. The state government recognizes the growing need and plans a wider expansion of these services.

The plan includes establishing palliative care units in all district hospitals and scaling up training programs for healthcare professionals. A key component of this expansion is integrating palliative care into the existing healthcare system, rather than treating it as a separate specialty. This will involve training doctors, nurses, and other staff in basic palliative care principles to provide comfort and support to patients across various departments.

The government intends to leverage the National Programme for Palliative and Hospice Care (NPPC) to secure funding and resources for this expansion. The NPPC focuses on making palliative care accessible and affordable for all, and the state government is committed to aligning its efforts with this national program.

The new unit at KC General Hospital will serve as a model for future palliative care facilities. It will offer services like pain management, psychological counseling, and bereavement support. The unit’s establishment is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for patients facing life-limiting illnesses and provide much-needed support to their families during difficult times. The Health Minister emphasized the importance of providing dignity and comfort to patients in their final stages of life, and this new unit is a concrete step towards achieving that goal.
