External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held talks with Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith in New Delhi, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in economic cooperation. Discussions encompassed a range of issues including trade, investment, climate change, and cooperation in multilateral forums.
Both ministers acknowledged the historical connections and shared values between India and Jamaica, expressing a desire to elevate the relationship to a higher level. A key outcome was the agreement to enhance economic engagement, with a focus on increasing bilateral trade and exploring investment opportunities in sectors like pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and technology.
Jaishankar highlighted India’s commitment to development partnership with Jamaica, including capacity building and technical assistance. Johnson Smith appreciated India’s support and expressed Jamaica’s interest in benefiting from India’s expertise in areas such as digital transformation and healthcare.
The talks also addressed regional and global issues of mutual concern. They exchanged views on climate change, advocating for greater collaboration among developing countries to address its impacts. Discussions included the importance of reforming multilateral institutions to make them more representative and effective.
Johnson Smith’s visit is significant as it follows up on the momentum generated by Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Jamaica in 2016. Both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate cooperation in diplomatic training. This MoU will enable exchange of expertise and best practices between the Foreign Service Institutes of both countries.
Jaishankar emphasized the importance of closer coordination in international forums, particularly within the context of the Global South. He reiterated India’s commitment to working with Jamaica to promote a more equitable and sustainable global order. The ministers agreed to maintain regular dialogue and explore new avenues for collaboration to further strengthen the India-Jamaica partnership.
