The Badvel-Nellore stretch of National Highway 67 (NH-67) is projected to be completed within the next three years, according to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Regional Officer, S.V.S.N. Murthy. The 82.5 km project, initially planned as a two-lane road, was upgraded to a four-lane highway in 2018 with an estimated cost of ₹1,400 crore.
Progress has been hampered by land acquisition issues, particularly in the Nellore district, and delays in securing environmental clearances. Approximately 95% of land acquisition is now complete, with the remaining portion facing legal challenges and requiring negotiation with landowners.
The project is divided into two packages: Badvel to Rapur (33.5 km) and Rapur to Nellore (49 km). The Badvel-Rapur package is currently 65% complete, while the Rapur-Nellore package is 40% complete. Construction work is actively underway on both sections, including earthwork, bridge construction, and pavement laying.
Key features of the project include the construction of two major bridges, several minor bridges, and underpasses to facilitate smooth traffic flow and address local connectivity needs. The highway aims to improve connectivity between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, boosting economic activity and reducing travel time.
NHAI officials are coordinating with district administrations to resolve land acquisition hurdles and expedite the clearance of utilities. They are also monitoring the progress of construction activities closely to ensure timely completion. The completed highway is expected to significantly enhance transportation infrastructure in the region and support the development of industries and tourism. The project also includes provisions for road safety measures, such as signage and crash barriers.
