The video, created by content creator Anoop, involved leaving an unattended iPhone in public spaces across the state to test whether strangers would attempt to steal it or return it to its owner. The results, surprisingly heartwarming, challenge stereotypes about crime and integrity.
The experiment took place in busy locations like bus stops, markets, and roadside eateries. Anoop strategically placed the iPhone in visible but seemingly forgotten spots, then monitored reactions from a distance. In most cases, passersby noticed the device and made efforts to locate its owner. Many asked nearby vendors or pedestrians if they had misplaced the phone, while others waited patiently, guarding the device until someone returned to claim it.
Out of 15 trials, 12 ended with the iPhone being safely returned—a staggering 80% success rate. Only three instances saw individuals pocketing the device, but even then, some later expressed regret when confronted by Anoop. The video highlighted touching moments, such as a street vendor refusing a cash reward for returning the phone, stating, ‘It’s your property—just take care of it next time.’
Shared across platforms like Instagram and Twitter, the clip has amassed millions of views, with users praising Kerala’s community values. Comments range from ‘This restored my faith in humanity’ to debates about whether similar experiments would yield identical results in other regions. Some viewers, however, criticized the setup as staged or argued that theft statistics don’t always reflect ground realities.
Anoop, the creator, clarified that the experiment wasn’t about shaming individuals but highlighting everyday acts of honesty. ‘We often focus on negative stories,’ he said. ‘This was a reminder that most people, regardless of background, choose to do the right thing.’ The video has also ignited conversations about societal trust’s role in public safety and how such values are cultivated in Kerala’s education and cultural framework.
While the experiment offers a hopeful narrative, experts caution against extrapolating broad conclusions. Nevertheless, the viral phenomenon underscores a universal truth: stories of kindness resonate deeply, especially in an era dominated by headlines of distrust and division.
